Desert Rain

Pigeons

On my windowsill,

Its raining!

My friends in other states do not believe it rains in rajasthan. They go, "Oh, its a desert state, right? Of course you don't get any rain!"

No, we do not wake up to find our beds turned to rafts. We do not paddle on tyres to cross the road. We don't even have to wade through waist-deep water to get to office.

But we do get our share of the monsoons.

Yesterday morning i woke up to find that it had rained all night and the street in front of our house had turned into a mountain brook. And it was not as much rain as a bone drenching pour, continous, unrelenting, like being inside a waterfall. And of course the truant schoolkid in me danced a little jig "No Office dang pota dang dadang dadang dang".

It cleared up a little later, but i cocked a snook at the dry-washed morning. No way was i heading for office now that i was back in bed...

(my apologies for my friends in Mumbai/Kerala/the North-east, for getting so excited over what must seem to you a puny drizzle, but you have to admit, there is something sleepily romantic about desert rain)

Oh, by the way, I wrote the haiku up above.

11 paper boats came floating back to me:

Though I have never been to the Indian Sahara , I had some image about da place in my mind....embedded from my childhood by many external sources.....but none of da images were as beautiful as da picture "desert rain"....
indeed a very light hearted and delightful presentation about rains there....
it also showed us dat how rain reigns on "CHILDREN's" mind....
and some suggestion to da author....."Try ur hand at Haiku"....

I have experienced desert rain when in Gujarat. One moment it was sweltering hot, the other moment it was raining cats and dogs. It was so much welcome, I couldnt tell you. I enjoyed rain there more than I do in Kolkata. In kolkata, I always carry umbrellas, but back in Gujarat, in spite of having umbrella and raincoat, I never used them. I loved walking in rain, like many others. The desert-like nature of Gujarat never let water flood the streets. One moment, it was waterlogged as hell, the next moment, the water is gone in a jiffy.
Of all the things that I miss in Gujarat, I miss those beautiful rains, when we could walk down the streets in a bindaas mood, getting wet, without reaching for an umbrella, without caring if our body is revealing like that of a seedy film actress, or if we would get sick later.Such was the beauty of desert mood.
Your posting was nostalgic. It reminded me of those beautiful rainy days.

I had also experienced desert rain for a little bit of time in Rajasthan . Though it was from my childhood experience , but i must say that it gives pleasure . Me with my parents were travelling in Rajasthan . We had got it after stepping at Udaypur . Raining always gives me such a joy & pleasure which can't be compared with other things . After going through your post , I was lost in my childhood memories ... I was just backtracking my memory .... wonderful writing
